The goal of the Career Center at Kearney High School is to prepare all students with skills, abilities and knowledge necessary to good make career and post secondary education choices. Skills and interest assessments, post secondary school exploration, business and industry tours and job shadowing prepare Kearney High students to become independent adults with opportunities for advanced education and career success.  Having a career field goal in mind helps students prepare Personal Learning Plans to enhance their education at Kearney High School.

Department Announcements
Nebraska Career Information System(NCIS)

NCIS provides the means for each person to develop their own personal learning plan. Using NCIS information and tools students are able to explore and discover who they are and where they might want to go. Students then use this knowledge to make their plan and see the connection between what they are doing now, what career opportunities are or will be available, and what they need or want to do for their future. To access NCIS assessments at home please see the NCIS Assessments Description document below.

Junior Business, Industry and Education Tours

Senior Job Shadowing Opportunities

Job Shadowing is an opportunity for seniors to spend time with a professional who is working in their chosen career field. Professionals share the benefits and challenges of their career, as well as advice to help students prepare themselves for success in the career field. Students are also able to experience the work environment and day-to-day activities.

Students are asked to research the career field using NCIS before their appointment so they have specific questions to ask the professional they are shadowing.

Both students and professionals are given suggestions to help make the shadowing appointment productive and informational.

Students and professionals are given surveys to complete after the appointment to insure the shadowing experience was positive for both parties.

Seniors should see Mrs. Eickhoff in the Career Center - Room 304 to make a request to Shadow. Every effort will be made to set up an appointment for seniors who are doing their job as a student well. (Arriving to class on time, attending class everyday, and passing their classes.)

Department Files
 Freshman NCIS Career Interest Activity.doc
Nebraska Career Information System (NCIS) is introduced to freshmen students in their Advanced Physical Science classes. The purpose of this activity is to help freshman students see how their interests fit into the “world of work” and how they can use the NCIS to explore careers and make personal learning plans for future career success.

Career exploration activities help students identify KHS classes that will prepare them for work in related career fields.
 Sophomore School Sort Activity.doc
Students are introduced to post secondary school information and the NCIS Undergraduate School Sort as sophomores. The purpose of this activity is to explain different types of post secondary education and degrees to students and to give them an opportunity to explore colleges, universities, community colleges and technical schools using NCIS.
 Junior Future Plan Activity.doc
Juniors are assigned the Future Plan activity in their American History Classes. This assignment gives juniors another chance to take career interest tests, explore post secondary schools and begin a “check list” for their personal, education and career goals. The Future Plan assignment encourages students to visit with their parents and guardians about their plans and how they can help support them on the path to their educational, career and personal goals.
 Personal Learning Plan.doc
This plan provides a framework for teacher advisors to discuss with a student and their parent/guardian the importance of making conscious and realistic decisions about educational choices based on his/her future plans. There are three major considerations as students, their parents, and a teacher advisor create and update their Personal Learning Plan:

1. Student living, earning, and learning goals.
2. Student achievement (to-date) as documented on their transcript.
3. A Personal Learning Plan program of study that reflects a 4 year plan for courses as well as other learning experiences designed to insure success in reaching educational, career, and lifestyle goals.

This plan is not “set in stone,” but is rather a continuing, evolving work in progress. Plans change over time, but it is nevertheless important to take time to plan.
